《音速小子》原定于2019年11月8日上映[1]，但由于观众对第一支预告片中的索尼克的设计非常反感，为了重新设计因此上映日期被延后到2020年2月14日[2][3][4]。上映后，虽然获得褒贬不一的评价，但票房却取得了成功，成为2020年全球票房第六高的电影[5]。

在第一部电影取得成功后，派拉蒙影业于2020年5月确认正在制作续集，杰夫·福勒、派翠克·凯西（英语：Patrick Casey (writer)）和乔许·米勒（英语：Worm Miller）回归制作[6]。尼尔·H·摩里兹、托比·阿舍尔（Toby Ascher）、中原亨（Toru Nakahara）回归制片，此前他们曾与伊藤武志（Takeshi Ito）共同制作第一部电影，而提姆·米勒、里见治（Hajime Satomi）和里见治纪（Haruki Satomi）则担任执行制片人[6]。第一部电影的大部分演员以及配音员都回归出演各自的角色，伊卓瑞斯·艾巴声演新角色纳克鲁斯[7]。拍摄于2021年3月在温哥华开始进行[8]。电影于2022年4月5日举行全球首映[9]，随后于4月8日在美国院线上映[10]。
